Cody Martin (Cole Sprouse) is one of the main characters in The Suite Life Series. He is an intelligent and thoughtful character on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and its spin-off The Suite Life on Deck. Cody is good friends with Marcus, Woody, London, Maddie, Rebecca, Jessica and Janice and Bob. He was recently dating Bailey Pickett, but they broke up in the episode, Break-Up In Paris. They are currently friends.

Biography

Cody was born at St. Joseph's Hospital in Seattle, Washington at 6:40 on a Saturday, ten minutes after his brother. He is the smarter of the two and takes more pride in schoolwork. While Zack has had more girlfriends than Cody, Cody has had fewer girlfriends for longer periods of time. Zack has never really had a girlfriend for more than one or two episodes.

Personalities

The Suite Life of Zack & Cody

[1] After traveling around the nation the twins and their mother Carey arrived in Boston, which became their new home until the The Suite Life on Deck. Cody is more erudite, mature, intelligent and sensitive than his twin brother Zack. He generally receives good grades in school. He shows less interest in girls than his brother, and typically doesn't date a lot. He is often referred to as a nerd, though has stated that he prefers "educationally gifted". London, daughter of the man who owns the Tipton Hotel in which he resides, used him on various occasions to complete her school work. Cody had a girlfriend named Barbara Brownstein. He has shown a passion for cooking, cleanliness, mime, dance and stamp collecting. Cody tends to be more sensitive, caring and better behaved than his brother, but is not perfect; he has shown acts of meanness and greed. Cody is known for doing well in school and showing interest in several intellectual activities. This has resulted in him attending math camp, winning a spelling bee etc. He can be easily frightened, and often does worse at physical activities than Zack. He also won the election for 8th grade class president, and wrote a letter to the city council.

Like Zack, he inherited some musical talents from his parents. It is seen that he received singing talents like his mother, as seen in the episode Lip-Syncing in the Rain and Sleepover Suite, and is shown to have an acting ability. In addition to vocal ability, Cody plays the French horn[2] and the violin[citation needed]. In contrast to Zack, Cody is closer to his mother and heeds her advice.

He has a great fear of horror movies, however, it was Zack rather than Cody who was more frightened by Zombie Mom.[3]

In Season 1, Cody tends to be as much of a troublemaker as Zack. As the show progresses, his character develops into a type who generally only gets in trouble by mistake or (more often) due to Zack's influence (although he is not perfect, and sometimes makes mistakes of his own, without Zack's influence.) Additionally, Cody is often the victim of various sight gags (which range from humorous to sometimes traumatic). Some examples include being pushed in horse feces[4], getting trampled[5], and being frozen in ice (which he does not remember)[6]. In "Big Hair & Baseball" it is revealed that he has astigmatism. In "Neither a Borrower or a Speller Bee", it was revealed that his (and probably Zack's) blood type is AB Negative. Cody is often shown wearing boxer shorts.[citation needed]

Both himself and Zack are frequently shown arguing, disagreeing and sometimes fighting in both series, however the twin siblings both share a platonic relationship with each other. He is also very nice but has tried to be a bit mean like his brother. He loves to cook and show his feelings to everyone. He also likes hugs from his mother.

Skills

Cooking, Singing and schoolwork.

Intelligence

Throughout the series, Cody has shown to be very intelligent, constantly besting Zack in anything that has to do with school or facts. This is shown many times as Zack usually has Cody do his school assignments and homework. He is also seen to have more common sense than his brother, usually thinking things through before doing them. His smarts, however, sometimes tend to either annoy or bore the people around him. Some of his theories are real like the Galapagos Gerdy, although Cody never new it was really real.

Strength

Though Zack is known to be the more physical twin, moments have been shown to speculate that Cody may be, deep down, stronger than his brother. In The Ghost of Suite 613 he is able to repeatedly smush Zack's face into the ground. Also in The Suite Life on Deck's "It's all Greek to Me" Cody is able to lift a glass case no one else could. In Shipnotized he can rip a towel into two pieces when angry.

Music

Cody is shown to have musical skill similar to his mother. In "Band in Boston" Cody is able to play the keyboard well and has written the band's song. Also, in "That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana" he and Zack make up a rap for Carey on her birthday. In "Lip Synching in the Rain" his singing has gotten him the part of Troy Bolton in his school's play "High School Musical." In "Breakup in Paris" he has written an Opera and sings it, proving to be a great singer.

The Suite Life on Deck

In The Suite Life On Deck, Cody holds on to the same general personality he had in the original series. In the progression of the series, the twins became closer. While at school on board the S.S. Tipton starting with the episode "Broke 'N Yo-Yo". Cody becomes the ship's towel boy to earn money after Zack maxes out both of their student cash cards on non-essential items, particularly food and gifts for girls Zack was interested in.[7]

He began to have a competitor in school, Bailey Pickett, who had a more stunning entry essay into Seven Seas High then he did, as mentioned by Ms. Tutweiler in the pilot episode "The Suite Life Sets Sail". He had a crush on Bailey for the entire first season, although initially after finding out that Bailey, who masqueraded as a boy due to the fact that Seven Seas High had no openings for female students, was a girl in the pilot episode. Both Zack and Cody were interested in Bailey until Mr. Moseby revealed in the following episode "Parrot Island" that Bailey had yet to get over the breakup of her relationship with a boy named Moose (later played by Hutch Dano in the episode "Mulch Ado About Nothing"). This prompted Zack to let Cody pursue her, though Zack said to him in the episode "Flowers and Chocolate", "You two [Cody and Bailey] wouldn't have heat if you were in a sauna... that was on fire... in a volcano... on the sun!" That same episode, he and his then-girlfriend Barbara Brownstein (Sophie Oda) broke up after telling Barbara that he had a girlfriend, claiming Bailey was the girl in question, though this was after he found out Barbara started dating his and Zack's friend Bob (Charlie Stewart), apparently starting their relationship hours after Zack and Cody left Boston on the S.S. Tipton to attend Seven Seas High.[8]

Cody tried to pursue Bailey several times throughout the first season of the series, most notably in the episode "International Dateline" when he planned on telling her how he felt at a school dance on the ship which was thwarted by Zack, London, Woody, Mrs. Pepperman (who thought that she was going to a karate class which was to be held in the same room as the dance) and repeatedly thwarted by a supernatural event upon the ship's crossing into the International Dateline which caused Cody to relive the previous few hours in time a la Groundhog Day; and as revealed in the episode "It's All Greek to Me", even devising a six-month plan to win her heart, though she was virtually oblivious to this. In the season one finale "Double Crossed" (part of the Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana crossover special), after Hannah Montana gives Cody tickets to the concert in Hawaii, Bailey kisses him on the lips, starting their relationship. Then in season two's "The Spy Who Shoved Me", it is revealed that when Cody lies, his nose crinkles. Also in "Lost at Sea", Cody goes behind Bailey's back on a decision while the group is lost at sea and only ends up with Bailey breaking up with him as a result. After some advice from Zack, he gets her back and turns out to be the hero by figuring out a way off the island: use all of London's clothes to form a balloon which they then used to fly back to the S.S. Tipton. He and Bailey get back together at the end of the episode, though they break up again during a marriage project for school in the episode "Marriage 101", getting back together again later on. Also in "Marriage 101", Bailey's nickname for Cody is Cody Kitten and his nickname for Bailey is Bailey Bunny.

In "Break Up in Paris", Cody and Bailey, (after experiencing a misunderstanding) have a major argument between each other that eventually concludes with the pair agreeing on ending their romantic relationship with each other.

Cody is proven to have a Swedish background, in the episode "The Swede Life", where it is shown that Zack and Cody's ancestors come from Sweden. He originally intended to attend Harvard, however he had a bad encounter with the Dean of Harvard, as he helped to lie when Zack dated the Dean's daughter. Later on, he made a new decision to attend Yale with Bailey, as he said in the episode "The Defiant Ones". It was revealed in "Rollin' with the Holmies" that Cody is a big fan of Sherlock Holmes and is the president of the Boston "Sherlock Holmies." According to Zack, Cody has a 5.0 grade point average. He is also an avid environmental activist, often noting many environmental hazards around them; even once going so far as to take a stand as towel boy and enforce a one towel per customer policy.

Cody has always said said that his biggest dream is to win a Nobel Prize.

Goals

  • Cody wishes to win the Nobel Prize
  • Cody wants to get into Harvard, but in the episode Shipnotized, he tries to impress Mr. Cabbit, and help Zack. He pretends to date Olivia, Mr. Cabbit's daughter, to help Zack go on secret dates with her, and he uses this to help impress Mr. Cabbit and get into Harvard, but they get found out and Zack says he doesn't have to go to Harvard. He can go to that school that "sounds like a big fish," Yale, and it is thought that Cody now wants to go to Yale.
