"Goin' Bananas" is the 7th episode of the second season of The Suite Life on Deck. Zack gets caught in a lie after he discovers the paper he turned in (and which Cody had wrote) featured a strange paragraph about bananas. London goes through withdrawal when her cell phone is taken away in class. Woody gets locked into playing an online game where his character is good looking and has a girlfriend.

The episode opens with Ms. Tutweiller giving a lecture on World War I. Every time she turns her back, all her students pull out their phones and start texting. When London keeps texting even after Ms. Tutweiler tells her to stop, her phones and PDAs are confiscated for a week. At the end of the class, she assigns them all a paper on a royal figure's life. Zack completely forgets about the paper until the day before it is due. Since he won't be able to finish it in time, Zack hacks into Cody's archives and steals a paper on Louis XIV to use as his own. A few days later, Ms. Tutweiller points out that "Zack" included a strange paragraph about how he has a bizarre phobia of bananas. She makes an appointment for Zack with Mr. Blanket, the school counselor, telling him she won't grade the paper until he has overcome his fear of bananas.

Zack tries to scare Cody in his room with a banana only to discover that, in fact, Cody is NOT afraid of them. Cody also reveals that before he archives his papers, he includes a bizarre paragraph in them just to throw plagiarists off the trail. Not wanting to admit he plagiarized, Zack has to pretend that he has a fear of bananas.

After meeting with Zack, Mr. Blanket theorizes that his phobia was a psychological response to Zack seeing himself as a "second banana" to his overachieving and smarter twin. When he forces Zack to confront Cody (who was forced to dress in a banana costume at the time), Zack admits that Mr. Blanket is correct, and that he never bothers to do schoolwork and avoids assignments because he knows that he'll never match up to Cody intellectually. Cody responds by pointing out that he always feels inferior because he knows that Zack is more popular, better at sports and with girls, and is generally regarded as the "fun" twin, while the only thing Cody has on his side is his brain. The twins hug and make up.

Meanwhile, London is going through severe phone withdrawal. Bailey tries to help her by teaching her numerous activities like Cat's Cradle. Instead of enjoying these games, London develops an incessant tapping pattern (which is obviously a psychological replacement for typing on the mobile phone). Bailey tries various things to help London cope, including thumb wrestling and cat's cradle before convincing her to try writing a letter by hand. London shocks both Bailey and Ms. Tutweiller by producing a letter written in calligraphy; Bailey notes that London insults her in the letter, but says she can't get mad about it because the lettering is so beautiful. London then realizes that she has been without her phone for a week and can have it back. As soon as Ms. Tutweiller gives the phones back, London vows never to write by hand again, much to their dismay.

Quotes[]

  • Ms. Tutweiller: Who can tell me what they know about the kaiser?
    • Woody: Ooh! If you want your pastrami on it, it costs an extra dollar.
    • Cody: She means the kaiser of Germany.
    • Woody: Oh! An extra euro.
  • Ms. Tutweiller: (reading Zack's paper) "I'm terrified of bananas. I imagine them chasing me, gnashing their fangs and growling. It's gotten so bad I can't sleep. Please help."
    • Zack: Does that not belong in a paper about (looks at the front page) "Louisivth"?
  • Zack: Now Miss Tutweiller is making me see Mr Blanket because she thinks I have emotional problems.
    • Cody: I've been saying that for years.
    • Zack: Yeah, but I'm not afraid of bananas!
  • Zack: Nothing I ever do seems good enough. It's not always easy being compared to you.
    • Cody: How do you think I feel? You've always been better at sports and girls and had more friends than me. Academics is the one place I can excel and be my own person, not just Zack's nerdy brother.
    • Zack: I didn't know you felt that way.
    • Cody: I didn't know you felt that way either.
    • Zack: I'm sorry man.
    • Cody: Me too. (Zack and Cody hug each other)
