Hotel Hangout is the 1st episode of the first season of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. In this episode, Zack and Cody make friends with two low-rankers (Max and Tapeworm) in their school, but they later abandon them for the "Drew Crew". The so-called cool kids.
Story[]
Zack and Cody Martin live at the Tipton Hotel with their mother, Carey Martin. After a tough first day at Buckner Middle School, they complain to their mom about having trouble making friends. Carey tries to cheer them up by dancing in the hotel lobby, but when Zack mimics her, he accidentally knocks over a large vase, which Esteban catches just in time.
At school, Zack and Cody attempt to impress the “Drew Crew,” the group of popular kids, but are laughed at instead. Nearby, Max and Tapeworm, two less-popular classmates, comfort them. The twins invite Max and Tapeworm back to the Tipton after school, where they discover that Max is an excellent dancer. She even offers to teach Carey some new moves for her show.
The next day, Drew approaches the twins after learning they live at the Tipton. Zack and Cody, eager to fit in, invite Drew and his friends to the hotel as well.
At the Tipton, the Drew Crew helps themselves to the buffet, impressing Zack and Cody. When Max and Tapeworm arrive, they are mocked by Drew and his friends. Mr. Moseby reminds everyone that the buffet is for paying guests only, and Zack and Cody sneak their friends to the roof instead, where they are served ice cream. On the way up, they bump into Mr. Moseby, causing Esteban (who is fixing a light) to fall from a ladder and swing from a chandelier before crashing down on Mr. Moseby. Esteban later agrees to “get rid of” Zack and Cody’s guests as repayment for saving his life.
Encouraged by Drew, Zack begins to believe that associating with Max and Tapeworm will make them uncool. Though Cody is reluctant and reminds Zack about peer pressure, he eventually goes along with it.
Later, Esteban tells Zack and Cody to kick out the Drew Crew. Cody lures them away from the game room by mentioning a better hotel across the street. Meanwhile, on the roof, Zack and Cody try to convince Drew to leave, but when he refuses, an argument breaks out. As Drew throws a basketball, it hits the satellite dish, causing it to dangle dangerously from the rooftop.
From the lobby, Carey and Mr. Moseby see the swinging satellite. On the roof, Zack and Cody struggle to hold the satellite’s wire. Max and Tapeworm arrive, help the twins, and accept their apology for earlier.
Carey rushes to help, but after scolding Zack and Cody, she finds herself struggling to hold the satellite while wearing inappropriate shoes. Eventually, Zack, Cody, Max, and Tapeworm let go, leaving Carey clinging awkwardly to the side of the wall.
As punishment for nearly destroying the hotel, Zack and Cody are forced to scrub the Jacuzzi using their own toothbrushes while Max and Tapeworm relax.
Meanwhile, London Tipton, the hotel heiress, is in danger of being grounded for failing her classes. Mr. Moseby hires Maddie Fitzpatrick, the candy counter girl, to tutor her — offering triple pay. Maddie reluctantly agrees.
During tutoring, Maddie tells London about her crush on Lance, the lifeguard. London advises her to “play it cool,” which helps Maddie get a date — but it ends badly when Maddie discovers that Lance only talks about water. Following London’s advice again, Maddie dumps him.
In the end, London passes her math test with a D+ and rewards herself with a plasma TV, while Maddie ends up single but proud of standing up for herself.
Quotes[]
- Carey: Why don't you guys invite some friends over from school?
- Cody: That's a great idea.
- Zack: Too bad we don't have any!
- London [about her dad]: When is he going to realize that education and me just don't mix?
- Maddie: Education and I.
- London: Hello! This isn't about you!
- Cody: Mom said we're not supposed to give in to peer pressure.
- Zack: We're not. We're just doing what everyone else is doing.
- Maddie: All he can talk about is water! Ok? Swimming in water, diving in water, splashing water, salt water versus fresh water. After talking to him for an hour, I had to go so bad!
- Zack: Yo, Drew. What up, dawg?
- Drew: Look guys, it's the clones.
- (Drew and his friends laugh and walk away)
- Zack: Did you hear that? Drew just mocked us!
- Cody: Whoo-hoo! (sarcastically) We're in!
- London: Good news!
- Maddie: Me too!
- London: Me first! I got a D+ in math!
- Maddie: That's good news?
- London: Yah! Thanks to you I passed! My daddy got me a plasma TV!
- Maddie: Wow! When I get an A+ all I get is an extra slice of pie.
- London: Is that your good news?
- Maddie: No, no, no, no, no. I took your advice and broke up with Lance.
- London: Yay! Now we are both happy.
- Maddie: Yeah! Now you got a Plasma TV and... I don't have a boyfriend.
- Zack: What kind of name is Tapeworm?
- Max: The kind you get when you can eat 20 hot dogs in 2 minutes.
- Cody: Wow, that beats my record!
- Zack: By 18!
- Esteban: Ooh! I can hear the ocean. (holding a vase to his ear)
- Cody: Let me hear!
- Zack: I wanna hear!
- Carey: Mr. Moseby, everything with you is like, "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!"
- (A satellite falls from the roof)
- Mr. Moseby: Sometimes Chicken Little knows what he's talking about.
- Max: Moseby, you run a good hotel.
- Mr. Moseby: Thanks son.
- Max: I'm a girl.
- Mr. Moseby: Uh-huh.
Trivia[]
- This is the first episode of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, launching the entire Suite Life franchise.
- Originally, "Grounded on the 23rd Floor" was going to be the series premiere, but it was later moved to a different spot in the season.
- Cody Martin is the first character to speak in the entire series, with the first line: “Mom! Why can’t you drive us to the playground?”.
- Carey and Mr. Moseby’s comment about “the sky is falling” references Chicken Little. The Disney movie premiered in October 2005, but its first trailer came out in early 2004. The story and the phrase, however, originate from the European folktale, Henny Penny.
- Zack and Cody have different backpacks in this episode compared to later episodes of The Suite Life and The Suite Life on Deck.
Morals[]
- Be careful who you choose as friends.
- Choose your friends wisely and thoughtfully.
Goofs[]
- Tapeworm and Max claim there's no space for them around the Jacuzzi, but when the camera pans out, you can see an entire empty side.
- Esteban is shown fixing a chandelier, which seems unlikely since Arwin is the hotel’s engineer and would normally handle those repairs.
