Lewis was convicted of manslaughter with a motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated and sentenced by Montgomery County, Maryland Circuit Court Judge William Millerto to five years in prison, two years of probation and 350 hours of community service. However, Judge Miller suspended four years of the prison term, citing Lewis's work after his arrest with a prison-based theater troupe which performed in jails, schools and churches to highlight the consequences of drug abuse. After these legal troubles, Lewis resumed his acting career, appearing mostly in supporting roles on situation comedies.
